Myanmar after the Elections

Panel-Discussion with the Ambassador of Myanmar in Berlin, H.E. Daw Yin Yin Myint

We were very honored being able to welcome H.E. Daw Yin Yin Myint, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at our panel discussion “Myanmar after the Elections” on January 13th 2016. Together with Dr Thomas Gambke, Member of the German Bundestag, Ambassador Dr Norbert Riedel, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, and Markus Löning, former Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid of the Federal Government of Germany, she discussed the country’s current developments after the elections in November 2015. The event was moderated by Michael Stempfle, correspondent at the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio Berlin.

The panellists agreed that all in all the present situation in Myanmar can be assessed quite positively. Since the beginning of its transformation process, the country has undergone an impressive development, which was widely acknowledged by the international community. However, the upcoming challenges the country will be facing have to be taken into account as well. Not only the establishment of a new government and the election of a president but also the reconciliation process and regional integration are crucial for the progress of Myanmar’s democratic transition. Amongst others, the country’s economic development has to be considered as vital in that respect.
