Remembering Guido Westerwelle

Around 400 guests from the political and the economic sector gathered in Cologne to honour Guido Westerwelle. They had been invited by the Westerwelle Foundation and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. Speeches were held by Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, Christian Lindner, leader of the Free Democratic Party, Wolfgang Gerhardt, Chairman of the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation, and Michael Mronz, the Westerwelle Foundation’s Chairman, amongst others. They honoured Guido Westerwelle as a liberal leader, all the while discussing current questions of liberal and European politics.

Michael Mronz explained he still lived by the compass he had shared with Westerwelle: “His curiosity, his optimism, and his drive created a strong legacy to draw from.” He stated that he wanted to carry on this legacy as Chairman of the Westerwelle Foundation. The foundation’s work sought to provide young people from developing countries with the chance to create a future of their own through their work.
