Walther Rathenau Institut awarded Rathenau-Award to Dr. Guido Westerwelle

The Walther Rathenau Institut, Foundation for International Politics, honoured our founder and former Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle posthumously with the Rathenau-Award on 17 October 2018 at the atrium of Deutsche Bank in Berlin.

The Walther Rathenau Institut, Foundation for International Politics, honoured our founder and former Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle posthumously with the Rathenau-Award at the atrium of Deutsche Bank in Berlin on 17 October 2018.

The award pays tribute to the foreign policy of Dr. Westerwelle, especially his commitment to a peaceful and multilateral world order. The Head of the Supervisory Board of the Rathenau Institut, Hartmuth A. Jung, said: “Guido Westerwelle’s vision of a world free of nuclear weapons is a legacy, which the Rathenau Institut would like to support by this year’s Rathenau-Award.”

The ceremony was broadcasted live on the Facebook page of the Westerwelle Foundation. The laudatory speech was given by the former US Ambassador to Germany and Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy. The German Minister of Defence, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, also appreciated the honouree. Michael Mronz, husband of Guido Westerwelle, who passed away in 2016, received the award in his stead.
