Study: The Influence of SMEs and Middle Class on Democracy Development

Researchers have already analysed the relevance of the societal middle class and their positive impact on democracy. The study we supported took into account small and medium sized enterprises and the data also shows a resilient effect on democracy stability. Moreover SMEs are a positive factor in phases of transitions from autocratic towards democratic systems. The operating indicators reflect the situation in more than 100 countries.
The study was undertaken by the Centre for Democracy Aarau/University of Zurich on behalf of the Westerwelle Foundation and the Bavarian Industry Association.

The foundation aims to give young entrepreneurs the chance for step into business in emerging and developing countries, so that the young generation has an economic perspective in their home country. In 2016 the foundation established the first so called “Startup Haus” in Tunis, offering co-working space and consulting for founders.
