23 young entrepreneurs from all over the world attended the fifth Westerwelle Young Founders Conference from 10th to 14th April in Berlin, Germany.
The conference including workshops, investor meetings and networking events marked the beginning of a yearlong programme. The aim of the programme is to support the young founders by strengthening their entrepreneurial skills and expanding their global networks.
This year’s participants are a diverse and inspiring group. They are from 19 different countries, such as Uganda, Malaysia or Chile and have their business focus among others on Digital Health, Edtech and Renewable Energies. However, they also have many things in common: All of the Young Founders are successful entrepreneurs who devise innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges in emerging and developing countries.
As part of the conference, the participants got to know the Berlin startup scene. In talks with BitBond founder Radoslav Albrecht, Janis Zech from NewCo Labs & Point 9 Capital and Julia Derndinger, sparring partner for CEOs, as well as during their time at Ahoy! Co-working space they gained a valuable insight in the startup scene of the German capital.
Moreover, the entrepreneurs strengthened their business skills in various workshops: Together with the Pitch Doctor Christoph Sollich they sharpened their presentation skills. In sessions with investors from GreenTec Capital Partners, La Famiglia VC and Mountain Partners they had the chance to talk about how to attract investors and get funding.
Furthermore, the founders were introduced to their mentors – all experienced founders themselves. As part of the programme, the Young Founders will be supported by a personal mentor who will act as sparring partners for their ideas and challenges. Amongst the mentors are notable German entrepreneurs, such as Emanuel Pallua, CEO of Foodora, and Luc Mérichaud, Head of the Deutsche bank Innovation Lab in Berlin. Following the first get-together of the mentoring tandems the evening was spent at a dinner with keynote speaker Philipp Justus, Vice President Central Europe at Google Germany GmbH.
